Proverbs-9-7I have a friend who is constantly attacking the behavior of the unbelievers in our midst.

He seems to have a radar unit that helps him spot the slightest misbehavior and a broadcast unit that pours our the condemnation unfiltered.

Someone swears, or tells an inappropriate story — he lands with both feet.

Someone mentions in conversation their boyfriend or girlfriend and the context makes it plan that they are cohabitating…… Yikes!   Here comes an earful.

  • Tattoos
  • Drinking
  • Late night carousing
  • Failure to explain a text the “proper” way

Anything he sees as a sin is his responsibility to loudly and forcefully condemn. punch

He doesn’t have many friends.  He also takes a lot of abuse.   He seldom gets to have deep and meaningful conversations about matters of faith.

He asked me once how come I often have these conversations and the same people run from him?

Proverbs 9:7   New International Version (NIV)

Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;
whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.

As I constantly tell him:

  • They are sinners — by definition they will sin
  • We are sinners — by definition we will sin
  • We found grace — our sin is forgiven
  • We need to help them discover grace……

A hungry man who finds bread doesn’t condemn his friends for being hungry…… hopefully he shares his food.

Unbelievers will act like unbelievers.   What else would you expect?  Those who follow Jesus should respond to sin as He did…..
