Be Like Mike

Remember the “Be Like Mike” ads of a few years past?  Pushing Gatorade the basic idea was to play and be like Mike (Michael Jordan).

I always laugh when I hear a sports hero or some other celeb say that “You can be anything you want to be if you dream big enough!”.

No you can’t!

I can dream of playing ball like Mike all I want.  It won’t happen.

  • I don’t have the skills.
  • I don’t have the physical build
  • I don’t have the youth
  • I don’t have the love of the game

You get the idea.

1996 Eastern Conference Semifinals, Game 5: New York Knicks vs. Chicago BullsIf were to happen at all — it would take a total transformation.  My body and mind would have to be completely taken over by all this is Michael Jordan.  It would not longer be me — it would him that people would see.

Paul tells us to be “transformed” by the renewing of our minds.  He is telling us that as much as possible who we are needs to come toward an end.  The very essence of who Jesus is needs to take over and change the way we think, the way we act, the ways people see us.

They won’t so much see us as they will begin to see Jesus……

And that’s not a bad thing!
