Back burner

Ever have one of those tasks that you just cannot seem to get going.  It lays there at the back our your mind — it has simmered on the “back burner” so long that pan has gone dry and we are getting whiffs of smoke.  back burner

Tomorrow.  Or maybe Thursday.  I’ll get to it.

“Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”
Marthe Troly-Curtin, Phrynette Married

Yeah right!

“If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would get done.”
Rita Mae Brown

Any more that seems to be my way of life.   I have felt like I was constantly two steps behind.  I have a list of reasons (read excuses) but the truth is — I just kept looking around the corner for a “better time”.

“If you choose to not deal with an issue,
then you give up your right of control over the issue
and it will select the path of least resistance.”
Susan Del Gatto

Ouch — that one stings a bit.  As disciples we are constantly being shown by the Holy Spirit areas of life in need of attention.  All too often we put in on that famous burner in the back and say — tomorrow.   But alas — the truth is:

“God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”
Augustine of Hippo

And so fellow learner, fellow Christ-follower — we all need to put on our big boy pants (or whatever big girls wear) and get at the task before us.

I had convinced myself that the revision I needed to make to my school paper would be an 8-10 hour ordeal.  Two and half hours of concentrated work fueled by a bowl of Broccoli Cheddar soup and it is almost done.

Next time God’s spirit gives you a elbow in the ribs take a moment to honestly listen.  Look at what He is putting before you and jump in.

“The scholar’s greatest weakness: calling procrastination research.”
Stephen King, 11/22/63

The research has been done — God is good, all the time.  God’s leading is for our growth and maturity.  Follow.

Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men — when did they start?  Immediately.
