4 Essentials

I ran across the following post while searching for a graphic.  I never found the graphic I wanted — but I wanted to share this one and the accompanying text with you.   Something to consider as you worship this weekend:

Four Essentials

4 essentials of disciplemaking

And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ You are witnesses of all these things. “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” (Luke 24:46-49 NLT)

In verse 46 we have the core of the gospel: the Messiah’s coming as the suffering servant, his death, and his resurrection. Verse 47 we have the mission: The proclamation to the nations the message of repentance and forgiveness. Verse 48 makes us accountable for the message (we are witnesses by experience). The last verse Jesus says that even though we have the message, the mission, and the responsibility, we are not quite ready. We must also have the empowerment for mission: Pentecost.

If we want to make disciples we must have these four things:

  1. The Gospel message
  2. A clearly defined mission
  3. Accountability for what we have experienced
  4. Empowerment by the Spirit for mission

When these four things are met, we have the four essentials of making disciples
